If you are not moving ahead, you’re falling behind. Traditions can be a guide, but not necessarily superior. Better and better ways can be found. Life is in constant change. It’s neither the strongest nor the most intelligent of a species that will survive, it is those who are most adaptable to changes. This pursuit of perfection leads to American’s positive attitude towards change and results in a nation of people committed to researching, experimenting, and exploring. Pre-reading Tasks Unit 1 Changes in the way we live Reading Chinese I Ching The I Ching Wade-Giles or “Yì Jīng” pinyin, also known as the Classic of Changes, Book of Changes and Zhouyi, is one of the oldest of the Chinese classic texts. 易 一名而含三義易簡一也;變易二也;不 易三也 。 Pre-reading Tasks Unit 1 Changes in the way we live Reading 易 yì used as an adjective, means “easy” or “simple”, whilst as a verb it indicates “change” or “the exchange or substitution of one thing for another”. 經 jīng here means “classic” i.e. text. The I Ching is a “reflection of the universe in miniature”. The word “I” has three meanings ease and simplicity, change and transation, and invariability. Thus the three principles underlying the I Ching are the following Simplicity – the root of the substance. The fundamental law underlying everything in the universe is utterly plain and simple, no matter how abstruse or complex some things may appear to be. Variability – the use of the substance. Everything in the universe is continually changing. By comprehending this one may realize the importance of flexibility in life and may thus cultivate the proper attitude for dealing with a multiplicity of diverse situations. Persistency – the essence of the substance. While everything in the universe seems to be changing, among the changing tides there is a persistent principle, a central rule, which does not vary with space and time. Pre-reading TasksReading 易簡一也;變易二也;不易三也 Change by barack Hussein Obama Jr. w/r0BVC9JOSiY/ Change Has Come To America If there is anyone out there who still doubts that America is a place where all things are possible, who still wonders if the dream of our founders is alive in our time, who still questions the power of our democracy, tonight is your answer. Change by barack Hussein Obama Jr. It’s the answer told by lines that stretched around schools and churches in numbers this nation has never seen, by people who waited three hours and four hours, many for the first time in their lives, because they believed that this time must be different, that their voices could be that difference. It’s the answer spoken by young and old, rich and poor, Democrat and Republican, black, white, Hispanic, Asian, Native American, gay, straight, disabled and not disabled. Americans who sent a message to the world that we have never been just a collection of individuals or a collection of red states and blue states. We are, and always will be, the United States of America. It’s the answer that led those who’ve been told for so long by so many to be cynical and fearful and doubtful about what we can achieve to put their hands on the arc of history and bend it once more toward the hope of a better day. It’s been a long time coming, but tonight, because of what we did on this date in this election at this defining moment change has come to America.
